Amy McHugh

13 Frederick Street, Totterdown, Bristol BS3

Amy is a multidisciplinary artist based in Bristol. Working mainly with paint, having discovered the regulating power of painting one colour after another, but also just whatever feels least pressured at the time. Cardboard is a favourite, as are thick oil pastels.

Curiosity and playfulness is a goal, a therapeutic repetitive action carving a new path, an alternate route to perfectionism and an antidote to a lifetime spent in the churn of productivity and burnout. Their work explores identity, regulation, and existential crises, often using animals to explore the difficulties they experience with human connection.

The work is child-like, bright and bold, often silly and intentionally rough. If you can’t laugh in the face of existential crisis, then what else is there to do.
