Fergus is an Emmy nominated tv director in search of the chance to try something more experimental. I want to make photographs into paintings which offer a sense of mystery. This series called Paintography attempts to achieve that using a technique called mordancage. A process that is as wonderful as it is frustrating. Mordançage chemically alters silver gelatin prints by dissolving the emulsion in the darker areas of the image. While it can produce beautifully ethereal results, it is just as likely to produce a mess but surrendering control to the chemicals can sometimes lead to joy. Just don’t try and repeat it.
